WORCESTER, MA -- For a majority of NFL prospects I've talked to they all harp the message: "It doesn't matter if I'm drafted or signed as an undrafted free agent, I just want a chance." For Monmouth DB, Tevrin Brandon, he'll have two opportunities after being invited to mini-camp for the both the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets.
Brandon took time today to discuss how things came about this past weekend and what the future holds.
What was it like Saturday waiting in hopes to hear from a team?
Well it was a long journey to say the least. When the 7th round came around I started getting some calls and agreed to sign as a free agent with the [Denver] Broncos. But then they called back and something happened on their end where it wasn't going to be able to happen. So now I have two opportunities ahead with the Jets and Chiefs.
Where's your first opportunity with and when will that be?
First, I will head to the New York Jets on Thursday to have an opportunity to showcase and earn a contract with them at their rookie mini-camp. That was offered the morning after the draft once they had found out my situation they were baffled.
When will you be attending Chiefs mini-camp and what's the plans from there?
If things don't workout with Jets I'll be heading to Kansas City for their rookie mini-camp the following weekend.
What are both organizations telling you that they like and what they want to see in order for them to offer you a contract?
Both teams are saying the same thing, 'you can't teach spees. So if I go out there and prove myself as a player and that I belong, I could possibly earn a spot. The main goal is to go out there and just play.
How does it feel to be one step closer to your dream and what do you need to do to get even closer?
It feels great to have an opportunity to get a shot to play in the NFL. Now I just have to elevate and adjust my game to the next level. I'm going to go out there and prove I belong. Keep my head up, be coachable, and compete. With those three elements I will put myself in the best situation possible.
